How Important is an Internet Connection to GT Sport?

Gran Turismo Sport is an online racing game, but it will also feature a campaign mode. However, if you were planning on only playing the single player mode without an internet connection, think again. In a recent PlayStation Blog post they have hinted that you will need an internet connection at virtually all times.

In order to ensure fair racing for all, GT Sport will require an internet connection for the majority of functionality. This connectivity requirement is to ensure that progress, car availability and driver ratings are properly maintained at all times.

Technically, it says “will require an internet connection for the majority of functionality”, and not must have internet at all times. However, it is looking like they want everyone connected to the internet almost all the time. This will ensure progress from all players is tracked properly.

Of course, to play the online, the main portion of GT Sport, you will need an internet connection to race against other people. However, GT Sport creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, hinted in the past that the online racing was only a small portion of GT Sport. Potentially as small as only 15% of the total game.

Currently, Gran Turismo 6 doesn’t need an internet connection to play the game, but it is required to get the daily bonuses. These bonuses would record how many days you signed into GT6 in row, and would reward you with additional  money for winning races. The more days in a row you singed in (up to roughly a week) the higher the rewards would be. This encouraged players to keep coming back to GT6 to earn more money than they normally would have. However, these only applied to online seasonal events, while the main single player mode could still be played without the internet.

GT Sport may do the same thing, but to what extent is unknown? I would assume they want you connected to the internet to make sure they can measure your progress and stats to share with others. Overall, the game is supposed to connect players with one another to race each other, and they need data about how well you are doing to do this.

With all PS4 games, you will need a PS Plus subscription to play online with others. However, it is probably not needed for seasonal events.

As with all PlayStation titles, PS Plus will only be needed for the online multiplayer, portions of the Arcade Mode, including limited two-player split screen, single player races on select tracks and time trials can still be played offline.

This news may be bad to hear for some people, but everyone knew Gran Turismo Sport was primarily an online game. It shouldn’t be that shocking to hear you will need an internet connection and PS Plus subscription to play it. How important is the internet and a PS Plus subscription to playing the game, however, is still unknown.
